ABOUT

Hi, I'm Mary Elizabeth! I am a former reading specialist with over twelve years of experience teaching reading and writing to children in grades K-12 and coaching teachers in literacy best practices. I am also the mom of a soon-to-be Kindergartner and a two year old and I’m always on the hunt for great books and activities to engage both of them.

Busy Bee Literacy provides play based enrichment classes and book clubs for children ages 2-6 to develop a love of learning and books! Through stories, art, and lots of play social emotional skills are developed alongside language and literacy skills.

I have my masters in language and literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and my doctorate in educational leadership through the University of Bridgeport. I am certified as a reading specialist and elementary teacher in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. I also have training from Wilson Reading, Columbia Teacher's College, and the Haskins Literacy Initiative at Haskins Laboratories at Yale.

My story in literacy education began when I was a college graduate placed as a reading specialist in an underserved community through Teach For America. I knew I loved teaching reading and writing but I also knew that I needed more education myself to learn about the science of reading. I went on to get my masters in language and literacy and later began teaching at an independent school in Greenwich, Connecticut that serves students with language based learning disabilities. After that I decided I was ready to move to NYC and worked as a learning specialist and then literacy coach at an independent school in Manhattan. When I had my first daughter we moved to Connecticut and I began work toward my doctorate in educational leadership locally. Currently I am enjoying sharing my love of all things literacy in a new way that allows me to focus on social emotional learning and literacy together.
